Philanthropy

Relay for Life:

Relay for Life is a regional annual event hosted by the American Cancer Society. The purpose of this event is to (1) Support cancer survivors and honor those who passed away battling the disease and (2) Fundraise money towards cancer research. We have been participating in the Riverside and Walnut’s Regional events since 2011. We have raised close to $1500 over the past two years via restaurant fundraisers, on-site activities and donations.

H.E.L.P. (Higher Education and Learning Promotion) Day:

We held the first ever H.E.L.P Day on February 23rd, 2013. This event is aimed towards local elementary, middle, and high school students to learn how to be successful students, time management skills, along with promoting the pursuit of higher educational degrees - especially math, science and engineering.  We invited students from Rowland High School for a day of interactive workshops, engineering lab tours, and a guided engineering building competition. We served liquid nitrogen ice-cream, while explaining the chemistry behind the freezing phenomenon. In addition, we had a series of workshops that were aimed at high school seniors who were particularly interested in succeeding at the college level. We ended the day with a mini e-car building project where each student had two to three engineering undergraduates at their disposal to build an e-car according to their own ideas. We will host the second annual H.E.L.P. Day this year on February 8th, 2014.

Long Night of Arts and Innovation:

We participated in Riverside’s Annual Long Night of Arts and Innovation, along with many organizations that showcased the best STEM and creative arts projects from University of California Riverside. This philanthropic event was tailored to encourage school children to attend, and inspire them about the possibilities of the arts and STEM fields. We demonstrated two projects – the first, a Thermo-Electric Generator Fountain, which applies the concepts from Thermodynamics and Electric Circuits, to make an aesthetically pleasing application of a Thermal Electric Generator and the second, a Desalinator, which applies concepts of Solar Thermal Energy conversion to take salt water from the ocean, and convert it to drinkable water.
